The Austrian real estate market is very well developed. Since there are appr. 5000 flats too little each year, you should take your time finding a new home for yourself.
You can find a wide range of offers from very old so-called “Gründerzeithäuser” buildings up to brand-new flats. First, you should get a feeling in which area of the city you want to live.
City centres are crowded and expensive, but there is more going on in the evenings and you are close to everything you might need. Outside the centres, housing is cheaper and you are closer to nature. Although Vienna has an amazing public transportation system it takes longer to reach city center. Note that apartment prices, no matter if renting or buying verify a lot from which district to district.
Walk around, take your time and try to get an impression about the different areas of Vienna. Then check the public transport (Metro, Bus, Train), infrastructure such as groceries, hospitals, shopping malls or areas nearby and how long it will take you to reach your workplace, university or points of interest.
